What is a reefer?
Basically--a reefer is a big refrigerator on wheels! Seriously--reefers have the capacity to keep cargo at required temperatures--frozen, chilled, or cool!
Reefers differ from dry vans in that they are often equipped with a refrigeration unit attached to the front of the trailer. You can see the refrigeration unit between the trailer and the tractor.
Reefers are used to transport freight that must maintain a certain temperature. In fact, refrigerated trucks can hold temperatures steady from 55 ℉ to -20 ℉°.
Reefers are extremely versatile and are used to transport a variety of items. It’s no secret that you’d need a cold truck to transport food items like frozen seafood and frozen baked goods, as well as, perishable goods such as fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and dairy products. But reefers are also used to transport a variety of non-food items like flowers, film, pharmaceuticals, fine art, and cosmetics!
Like dry vans, reefers can hold up to 45,000 pounds of freight and have maximum length of 53 ft, a maximum width 8.2 ft, and a maximum height of 8 ft.
