Tight Capacity Crunching Your Profits?

Piggy Bank

At Pyramid Transport, we partner with shippers and carriers to efficiently and cost-effectively move freight. We’re especially good at temperature-controlled freight; in fact, it’s our specialty. And we know that capacity is tightening particularly in the temperature-controlled segment of the transportation industry. According to DAT Solutions, loads outnumber trucks by 15 to 1 in temperature-controlled freight.

 What’s going on?

Recently, Mark Montague, Industry Pricing Manager at DAT, was interviewed by Supply Chain Drive, and when asked about tightening capacity, he claimed that reasons for the crunch could be divided into three main problems--a strong economy!, unfavorable winter weather, and the ELD mandate. He was quick to stress that behind these three divisions was the continuing problem of a driver shortage.

We’ve been crunching the driver shortage numbers in the cold-chain because it’s our job to stay ahead of the curve. Here’s what we know--the shortage is likely to continue for a while, and it’s exacerbated by the ELD mandate. Drivers need to make money, and they can no longer fudge paper logs to make up for lengthy wait-times. The ELD mandate went into effect on December 18, 2017, but won’t be enforced until April 1, 2018 at which point capacity will probably get a lot tighter.

Now is the time for shippers and carriers to find partners with the expertise to navigate these turbulent times.

In the long run, we believe that ELDs will benefit the industry in a variety of ways, from providing real-time visibility to promoting safety to saving money and increasing profits. But the implementation phase is occurring during an almost perfect storm of volatility in the logistics business which is contributing to the capacity crunch and rate hikes. Here’s the good news, adoption rates for ELDs are highest--at 90%--in the refrigerated sector.
